Norman “Norm” Gretzinger serves as managing director of the private equity firm EG Capital, a company he co-founded in 2003. Active in charity, Norm Gretzinger regularly donates to Schools for Salone.
Launched in 2004, Schools for Salone collaborates with local villages in Sierra Leone, West Africa, to rebuild schools destroyed in the civil war that lasted for ten years and ended in 2002. It also trains teachers at rigorous summer institutes.
Sierra Leoneans must make the request to build schools as nonprofit Schools for Salone believes that the best solutions are self-initiated. There is an extensive vetting process for villages who desire a new school - only the most motivated and committed qualify and get to work with the organization’s team.
The nonprofit states that each community must provide leadership and commitment to the school project, suitable land for school construction, free unskilled labor, local building materials, and organization for teacher salaries from the Sierra Leone Ministry of Education.
When funding has been secured, Schools for Salone will provide for the any construction materials not locally available. It teams up with another nonprofit which locally supervises the project in Sierra Leone. Schools for Salone has constructed 19 primary school buildings as well as two secondary school libraries since 2005.
